Music is a sound originated from a body vibrating at regular frequency. Noise is a sound from different bodies vibrating at irregular frequencies. The following are the characteristics of sound. They are

  • Pitch: This is use to distinguish a high note from a low note. A tight string will produce high pitch while a loose string will produce low pitch. It is a measure of the depth of a tone.Pitch depends on Frequency.
  • Quality: This is also called Timbre. This is use to distinguish a high note from a low note of the same pitch and loudness. The quality of sound produce from trumpet and flute defers despite the same pitch and loudness.Quality depends on group of frequencies that are blended together called Overtone or harmonics.
  • Loudness: This is the sensation in the mind of an individual depending on the intensity of sound. Loudness depends on Amplitude.
These can be categorized into three:
  • String Instruments: These are instruments that produce sound by the vibration of thier strings. Examples are piano, harp, guitar, violin, sonometer etc

  • Wind Instruments: These are instruments that produce sound by blowing air through them. Examples are saxophone, trumpet, flutes, clarinet, trombone etc
